VTube Studio

VTube Studio Setup Guide (Mac)

This guide covers how to install VTube Studio, import a custom Live2D model, and set up facial tracking.

Phase 1: Installation

VTube Studio is the industry-standard software for running Live2D models. It is free to use.

  1. Download Steam:
    • Go to store.steampowered.com.
    • Click "Install Steam" (top right) and install the application.
    • Create a free account or log in.
  2. Install VTube Studio:
    • Open the Steam app.
    • Search for "VTube Studio".
    • Click "Play Game" (it is free) to download and install it.

Phase 2: File Preparation

Before opening VTube Studio, ensure your model files are organized correctly.

  1. The Folder Rule: Your model files must be inside a dedicated folder. Do not have loose files.
  2. Check Contents: Inside that folder (e.g., named MyModel_v1), you should see:
    • filename.moc3 (The model data)
    • filename.model3.json (The settings)
    • A folder (usually filename.2048) containing the texture atlas image.

Phase 3: Importing the Model

  1. Launch VTube Studio.
  2. Grant Permissions: If your Mac asks for Microphone or Camera access, click Allow.
  3. Open Model List: Click the Person Icon in the top-left corner.
  4. Import: Click the button labeled "Import Your Own Model".
  5. Transfer Files:
    • VTube Studio will open a Finder window showing where it stores models.
    • Drag and drop your specific model folder (from Phase 2) into this window.
  6. Load:
    • Go back to the VTube Studio window.
    • Click OK on the popup message.
    • Click the Person Icon again to refresh the list.
    • Click your model's icon to load it.

Phase 4: Camera & Tracking Setup

1. Mac System Permissions (Crucial)

If the camera does not work, it is usually blocked by macOS.

  • Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
  • Find VTube Studio in the list and ensure the toggle is ON.

2. Activate Camera

  1. In VTube Studio, double-click the screen to show the menu.
  2. Click the Gear Icon (Settings) -> Camera Icon (top left).
  3. Select Camera: Choose "FaceTime HD Camera" (or your webcam name).
  4. Turn On: Click the large "Camera ON" button.
    • You should see a preview of your face with tracking dots in the bottom left.

3. Calibration

  1. Sit comfortably. Keep a neutral expression (mouth closed, eyes open normally).
  2. Click the "Calibrate Camera" button in the settings.
    • This tells the software what your "resting" face looks like.

4. Link Model Parameters (Auto-Setup)

If your face moves but the model does not:

  1. Click the Model Settings icon (Person icon, 3rd tab down in Settings).
  2. Click the "Auto-Setup" button (looks like a Play button).
  3. Select "Auto-Setup for Live2D Cubism".
  4. Click OK.
    • Your model should now mimic your movement!

Phase 5: Quick Tuning (Optional)

If the mouth jitters or hangs open:

  1. Go to Model Settings.
  2. Scroll down to Mouth Open.
  3. Fix Hanging Mouth: Increase the IN (Min) slider slightly (to approx 0.1). This creates a "dead zone" so the mouth stays fully shut when you aren't talking.
  4. Fix Jitter: Increase the Smoothing slider slightly (to approx 15).
